"A YEAR'S STORAGE IN A YEAR"

January

Quote:
"Let every head of household see to it that he has on hand enough

food and clothing and, where possible, fuel also for at least a year."

                 J. Rueben Clark, 1937

Spiritual Goal:
Hold Family Home Evening every Monday for one month.

Provident Living Goal:
Review your retirement goals. Are you putting
enough aside to be able to support yourselves and to do the things you
want to do when you retire? Also change the batteries in your smoke
alarms.

Storage Goal:
24 cans of meat or fish per person, 1 gallon bleach per
person, can opener, garbage bags and laundry detergent.

Points to ponder:
Do you know what to do in an ice storm: Where can you
find out? If you look it up, you are more likely to value the information.
Who is your closest church neighbor? Do you have a neighbor that you could commiserate with.

Quote:
"There is a wise old saying 'Eat it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.' Thrift is a practice of not wasting anything. Some
people are able to get by because of the absence of expense. They have their shoes resoled, they patch, they mend, they sew, and they save money. They avoid installment buying, and make purchases only after saving enough to pay cash, thus avoiding interest charges. Frugality means to practice careful economy."

                    James E. Faust

Spiritual Goal:
Schedule time each day to read with your family from the Book of Mormon.

Provident Living Goal:
Plan and carry out a Family Home Evening on home fires. Include planning an escape route and              practicing it.

Storage Goal:
100 pounds (total) pasta and flour per person, hand grain mill, thread, needles, buttons, and zippers.

Points to ponder:
Are we going to have a garden in the spring? What about perusing seed catalogs? Did we have a debt     free Christmas or are we still paying off credit cards? How can I avoid that this year? Isn't there a President's Day sale so I can start buying for Christmas 2000 and use cash?

PUT ON SHOES THAT COVER YOUR FEET. Storms cause debris and it is difficult to get around when there is glass, splinters, pine needles underneath your feet. What else can you do to be prepared for a storm? What does your family know about downed wires? What does it mean that electricity will arch when turned back on? Why do firemen put up DO NOT CROSS yellow tape around down wires?

BAKING SODA starts working as soon as it gets wet, so once a
batter is mixed, bake it right away.
Most BAKING POWDER is double-acting, or has two rising
ingredients. The first is triggered by moisture and the
second by heat. That means you can delay baking after the
batter or dough is mixed. If you're suspicious about your
baking powder, test it by putting 1/2 teaspoon in 1/4 cup
hot water. If the water bubbles like mad, it still works.
When confronted with the questions growing out of the use of
the various baking powders now on the market, the puzzled
layman is apt to sigh for the good old days when this
product was rather haphazardly mixed at home. Just in case
you run out of baking powder, mix--for each teaspoon of
baking powder called for in the recipe--1/2 teaspoon cream
of tartar, 1/3 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda and 1/8 teaspoon
salt. After adding the above ingredients, do not delay
putting the batter into the oven. And don't try to store
this mixture, as it has poor keeping qualities. If you doubt
the effectiveness of any baking powder, test by mixing 1
teaspoon of baking powder with 1/3 cup of hot water. Use the
baking powder only if it bubbles enthusiastically.
